Welcome to the Undergraduate Education Program in the Department of Anesthesia.

The Department of Anesthesia is involved at all levels of the medical school curriculum. Our faculty are involved in many pre-clerkship courses, including the Art and Science of Clinical Medicine (ASCM I and II) and Mechanisms, Manifestations and Management of Disease (MMMD).

In third year, the University of Toronto medical students must complete a two week Anesthesia rotation. Approximately 225 students rotate through one of 6 core teaching hospitals or one of 5 community partners. The rotation provides airway, resuscitative, pain management and preoperative assessment skills. This rotation includes one day at the Simulation Center at Sunnybrook Health Sciences Center. Students are exposed to high fidelity simulation, working through case scenarios involving cardiorespiratory resuscitation. The CanMEDS roles of collaboration and communication are highlighted.

The Department of Anesthesia offers many electives in Anesthesia. Our core electives for University of Toronto students occur from September to December of fourth year. We also offer many selectives for our Transition to Residency program (TTR) from February to April of fourth year.

Opportunities for medical students to shadow a faculty member in the pre-clerkship years are available. Research opportunities for medical students are available through CREMS, or by contacting research faculty directly.
